We wondered whether Wigan were too young and inexperienced to stop the seasoned winners of St Helens.

But we forgot one of the golden rules of rugby league - never back against Wigan at Wembley!

Congratulations to Denis Betts and his team, an outstanding way to win the Women's Challenge Cup for the first time.

St Helens coach Craig Richards speaking to BBC Sport:

"First and foremost, congratulations to Wigan I thought they were really good today.

"We didn't quite nail what we talked about and against a side like Wigan, if you don't get the detail right, this is what you end up with.

"You've got to find energy and the way to find energy is to stick with your system. I think we panicked early doors, we let in a couple of tries that were alien in that we would generally make teams work harder.

"This Wigan side is a good side but so are we. We know we are, we just need to be better on the day."

Wigan Warriors' scrum-half Isabel Rowe speaking to BBC Sport:

"I've been nervous this whole journey but when you're playing with women as incredible as they are, they help you, they calm you.

"I just wanted to soak up the occasion, I wanted to enjoy it and that helped to calm me. I was a lot more nervous in the semi-final.

"Denis is amazing, he's a legend and everybody respects him at the club. He did amazing things when he played and he's doing amazing things now coaching."

Wigan Warriors boss Denis Betts speaking to BBC Sport:

"I know the score line looks really strong but it's a really tough game. Both sides were really competitive, you saw some really talented athletes out there today and I just thought our form is really good.

"When they get ahead, they are hard to stop at the moment.

"Grace wins the players of the match. I'm not really sure about giving back the player of the game but I thought Mary Coleman for 70 minutes was the player on the field by a long way.

"She's got so much energy. She's tough to tackle but she's also quick.

"They were nervous coming into this game. Emotions were running wild but we managed to calm it, we've experienced it now, we've won a massive game. They can use the skill of the game to push that on again.

"We are not setting any goal or targets but that's what's in front of them, to keep getting better."

At this point, St Helens had finally got on the scoreboard through a Katie Mottershead try, but Eva Hunter blitzed her way through on the outside to grab Wigan's fifth try and effectively seal the game.

And there was no let up as Grace Banks and Anna Davies added two more to turn a commanding victory into an absolute thrashing.

For those of you just ing us, this was front-row forward Mary Coleman adding a second try as Wigan put a marker down early, racing into an 18-0 half-time lead.

Seven tries and seven different scorers.

Wigan really did attack St Helens from all angles and in all ways.

Their speed and power really was a joy to behold.

"It's unreal. We've been working towards it for the past few years and finally we've won a trophy. We are absolutely buzzing.

"I've been crying all week, my emotions are taking over.

"We knew St Helens had a lot of experience, they've been here a few times now. We just knew that we had to compose. Complete every set, keep calm and stay patient.

"We've got karaoke so we will see who the best singer is in the team. Absolutely no doubt Denis will be on that karaoke."

Emily Veivers is walking down the Wembley steps with a winner's medal around her neck and a huge smile on her face.

Winning must be the best kind of painkiller there is!

St Helens have quickly made their way up the steps to collect their losers' medals. An unfamiliar walk for them at Wembley.

Now it's Wigan's turn. Huge smiles on the faces of every single player.

And completely deserved.

It's left to captains Vicky Molyneux and Georgia Wilson to do the honours and lift the Women's Challenge Cup for the first time.

"I don't know how to feel to be honest. It's just a big shock.

"I didn't think when I first started playing with the lads that I was going to end up at Wembley. Little Grace would really be proud.

"Denis' experience led us under the pressure today. He said 'just imagine it's a field. Strip back the stadium and you're just on a field with your mates'."

"That was a professional performance from Wigan. They came here and knew what they needed to do.

"Saints had a little resurgence after half-time but I don't think at any point Wigan looked like they weren't going to win".

Wigan Warriors Vicky Molyneux speaking to BBC Sport:

"We deserve this so much. Last year we closed the gap but the work in pre-season - these girls, Denis, the club - they have put everything into us.

"We thought about our whys. Why were are here and why we wanted this? We did it for us as well but we've done it for our families.

"Mentally, I'm still on it, I love it. I'm feeling quite fit, the last couple of games I'm building into it a little bit more.

"Denis said to me when we lost against the Saints in the semi-final last year when we talked about one more and I said I need a final and he said 'I'll get you there Vic' and now we are here. I'm so happy."

Seven tries to one. Better in attack and defence.

They rarely let up from minute one to minute 80. An absolutely deserved success for Wigan Warriors.

With Wigan legend Denis Betts coaching, this is a real statement of intent from this storied club.

The Wigan side have been phenomenal and it's hard to pick but I believe the player of the match deserves to go to Grace Banks.

She's had her hands on the ball so much, she's set up so many unbelievable tries, her assists must be right up there.

Wigan have brought an intoxicating mix of speed and power to Wembley.

They have just blitzed St Helens.

What more can I say than Wigan have already said with their performance today?

This isn't just a sensational showing, it's a proper humbling of St Helens.

Wigan deserve all the plaudits they get today, they've been brilliant.
